Mike Salter

Senior Trainer/ Consultant
Brief info

With a passionate focus on delivering great client outcomes, I have accumulated over 20 years of experience working with Wilson Learning in multiple roles including; Head of Sales; Learning Consultant; Facilitator, and finally as a client. My roles as Manager for L&D at both StatePlus and CBA provided me with expertise that includes: managing and leading a learning department, developing and implementing learning business strategy, and supporting organisational transformations. At Red Education, I am leveraging all of these experiences to help clients achieve their business objectives through the engagement and development of their people.

Service philosophy forged in international hotels

Mike has a diverse background that combines service, sales and learning. His career started in international hotels, where he forged a service philosophy that he still applies with clients today. Deciding that the hotel world wasn’t for him, he took a break, guiding and instructing in European ski resorts. On returning to Australia, he moved into recruitment while studying for a Bachelor of Business, Organisational Development and HR. From recruitment, he made the transition into Learning and Development and managing the L&D function in blue-chip corporates including Commonwealth Bank and StatePlus.

“My background looking after the L&D function for these large organisations means that I understand the challenges professionals in those roles are facing. I get exactly what it’s like to implement a program in a large, complex organisation.

I have first-hand experience of how L&D managers need to do all this while ensuring the skillsets of the workforce meets the needs of a constantly evolving business,” said Mike.

Professional Development

Before joining Red Education, Mike was Head of Sales for Wilson Learning ANZ. He also delivered many of their training programs in the region, leveraging the company’s 70 years of global experience in technical sales, support and leadership teams.

In 2020, Red Education became the Authorized Distributor of Wilson Learning as Red Education Professional Development and Mike now heads up this area of the business. “We understand that systems and technology specialists need more than technical proficiency and certifications to ensure success for themselves and their companies,” said Mike.

‘It’s exciting to see how developing high-level interpersonal skills, in consulting, sales and leadership, in addition to their technical expertise, allows IT professionals to flourish within their organisations. Technology is constantly changing, but people skills are always needed, whatever functional area our students are in,’ he said.

Mike’s professional certifications include:

  • Bachelor of Business, Organizational Development and HR
  • Leader Trained Wilson Learning Social Styles
  • Wilson Learning Building Relationship Versatility (Social Styles)
  • Wilson Learning Counsellor Salesperson
  • Wilson Learning Signature Customer Service
  • Wilson Learning Sales Advantage Series

Community involvement

Mike also uses his leadership and communications skills extensively in support of his local community, having volunteered as the Vice President of the National Scow Moth Association, President of the Manly Junior Sailing Association, Vice President for Competition at Lane Cove Swimming Club, a Scout Leader and even the Manager of one of sons’ soccer and ski racing teams.

National Rowing Champion

As well as skiing, Mike has a passion for watercraft of all sorts. He has been a National Rowing champion and has had a love of sailing since childhood. He has sailed vessels as varied as the historic tall ship HMB Endeavour all the way through to his current favourite, a lovingly restored traditional wooden Scow Moth dingy. Every Saturday Mike races his Moth at Balmoral Sailing Club on Sydney’s North Shore. For fitness, he enjoys Kayaking around the beautiful bays and beaches of his local area.
