The client, a senior cloud engineer at a Sydney-based ethical investment management organisation, faced significant obstacles in managing and configuring FortiGate nextgeneration firewalls (NGFWs). They required in-depth knowledge to effectively deploy, administer and monitor FortiGate devices, particularly in configuring security profiles to block threats such as viruses and torrents. However, access to quality training was limited, with most FortiGate Administrator courses offered only in US time zones. The lack of confirmed local training sessions further hampered upskilling efforts.

Red Education enrolled the client in a confirmed FortiGate Administrator 7.4 course just days after their initial enquiry. This course provided the client with practical training in configuring and controlling administrator access to FortiGate devices, using both the graphical user interface (GUI) and command line interface (CLI) for administration. It also covered the implementation of firewall policies to manage network access, inspection of SSL/TLS-secured traffic to prevent encrypted threats from bypassing security policies, deployment of FortiGate devices in high availability (HA) clusters, and methods to diagnose and correct common problems. Red Education’s Account Manager and Operations team collaborated to ensure rapid procurement and enrolment, securing the client’s place in the upcoming class and delivering a seamless training experience at a local time convenient to the client.
Outcomes
The client gained critical skills to confidently manage FortiGate devices, including configuring administrator access, applying firewall policies to control network traffic, and inspecting encrypted traffic to prevent policy evasion. They also learned to deploy FortiGate in high availability (HA) mode to ensure business continuity and diagnose common issues more effectively.
